How is APUSH Scored?
The multiple-choice section accounts for 40% of the total composite score, while the free-response sections account for 60%. Raw scores are scaled along a grading curve and converted to the 1-5 AP® scores. If the APUS score is between 0 to 54, you stand under grade 1, if it is between 55 to 84, you stand under Grade 2. If it is between 85 – 99, then your Grade is 3. If you have scored between 100 – 119, then you are Grade 4 and if it is between 120 – 180, then you are under Grade 5.
The longest part of the APUSH exam is the APUSH DBQ. The APUSH DBQ lasts for 60 minutes, including a 15-minute reading section, and it makes up 25% of the exam. So it’s no wonder that many students can get intimidated by the APUSH DBQ.
What is a good AP® US History score?
If you score a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP® exam, that is generally considered a good score. The College Board denotes a 3 as ‘qualified, 4 as ‘well qualified,’ and a 5 as ‘extremely well qualified.’ Many colleges and universities will offer you college credits for scoring in these ranges.

How to Calculate your scaled AP® U.S. History score
The exam covers all U.S. History from 1491 to the present and focuses on seven broad themes:
- Culture and Society.
- Migration and Settlement.
- America in the World
- American and National Identity.
- Politics and Power.
- Work, Exchange, and Technology
- Geography and the Environment.
To calculate a final, scaled AP® U.S. History score for any exam, follow the steps below.
#1. Calculate your correct multiple-choice answers
There are 55 total questions in the multiple-choice section of the AP® U.S. History Exam. Each one represents a potential raw point you can get if you answer it correctly.
#2. Estimate your scores for your essays
There are three essays you can take in the AP® U.S. History Exam. Each one represents a potential 9 raw points for a total of 27 points for the entire section. Since this section is much more subjective, you’re going to have to do some heavy guesswork for what you got.
#3. Proceed to finding your composite score
You’re going to now take the two numbers we got above and turn them into a composite score between 0 and 150. To do that, you’re going to use the following formula:
(Raw multiple-choice score x 1.23) + (Raw free-response score x 3.05) = Composite score.
The highest converted score you can get on the multiple-choice section is 82.5, and the highest converted multiple-choice score you can get is 67.5. Both represent 55% and 45% of 150, respectively. Your composite score is going to fall in one of five different sections given on the table above to get your scaled score. The higher your composite score is, the better.
Why are AP® US History scores curved?
The College Board curves AP® exams every year in order to maintain a certain standard and level of consistency; AP® US History is no exception. AP® courses are inherently college-level classes, and thus the scoring guidelines are reflected to account for the rigor of these courses.
