Is it OK to go to homecoming without a date?

Homecoming is typically a more formal event than other school dances, so it’s best to go with something more dressed up than your everyday jeans and T-shirt combo. Homecoming is considered by most people to be a formal, or smart casual, event.

Differences between Homecoming  and Prom

The homecoming dance and prom can definitely seem pretty similar. However, they are actually different. American students usually have a homecoming dance and a prom. Homecoming events at American universities are centered around a special football game that has been designated as the “homecoming game.” It is a time where many alumni return to campus to watch the game and to join current students in showing their school pride.

  • Homecoming can be a lot more casual than prom. While some schools go all out and throw prom at an event space off-campus, homecoming is usually held in the school’s gym. People who go to prom normally wear elaborate dresses and suits. Prom is classed as a much more formal event.
  • Homecoming is much more inclusive than prom. At most schools, prom is open only to seniors and sometimes juniors, but homecoming is for all — even the underclassmen.
  • The two dances come at different times of the year. While prom often marks the beginning of spring and the end of the school year, homecoming, which often takes place in September or October, doubles as a kind of welcome-back-to-school event.

What Happens At Homecoming | Some American homecoming Events

1. Tailgate

A “tailgate” is the back part of a vehicle (usually a truck). It can also refer to parties that typically happen in the stadium parking lot just prior to the game. It is called “tailgating” because people used to lower the tailgate of their truck and hang out with friends before a game. Nowadays, tailgating has gone to a whole new level with people setting up tents, BBQ grills, tables, chairs, lots of food & drink, and sometimes even a TV or two.

2. Pep Rally

Pep rallies are designed to bring out your school spirit and to “pep up” or encourage the football team to do their best. They are usually held in the days leading up to a big game, and typically feature a marching band (or drumline) and cheerleaders.

3. The Half Time Show

Half Time Show usually takes place between the first and second halves of the game –an intermission where the teams go back to their respective locker rooms and re-group for the second half of the game. During half time, marching bands, cheerleaders, and dance squads usually perform. The half time show at a homecoming game is usually extra special.

4. Homecoming Court

Among the festivities, a homecoming court is often crowned, with the nominations of homecoming kings, queens, princes, and princesses. Students Often at times elect a “Homecoming King & Queen” as well as other representatives of the student body to the Homecoming Court. Being a member of the Homecoming Court is often a coveted position, particularly in high school. Court members are often revealed/introduced at a Pep Rally or homecoming dance.

The homecoming tradition in America began as a celebration for the first football game of the season. This would result in former pupils returning to their old campus. However, over the years, this developed into a major event. Now it includes so many different activities, such as a pep rally. Here’s an example of how homecoming is presented.
