The History of private Higher Educational Institutions in Cameroon

The first Private Higher Educational institutions in Cameroon were set up in the 1960s. They were created by religious groups. They essentially teach Theology and function as associations. Post-secondary institutions set up by lay persons date as far back as the 1990s and are extensions of private secondary schools.
The blossoming of private post-secondary education stemmed from a combination of the following factors:

• The economic situation of the country
• Limited training opportunities in State institutions, which have remained classic
• The high demand for professional training.

There is a rapid growth in student population. It moved from 4 327 in 1998/1999 to 6417 in 1999/2000. In 2003/2004, about 12 000 students were registered in private higher educational institutions

• Diplôme Supérieur d’Études Professionnelles (DSEP)
• Higher Professional Diploma (HPD)
• Higher National Diploma (HND)
