How To Jump To Another Field by Changing Career
How To Jump To Another Field by Changing Career. You might have desired a career change for some time and now is a natural opportunity to build the skills you need to enter a new industry or role. No matter your circumstances, there are strategies you can adopt to set yourself up for a successful career change.
Changing industries or area of focus can be a challenge for sure, but one you can overcome. Two things to note when jumping to another field:
- Ensure the brand you are conveying through LinkedIn, your resume, in networking situations and interviews is focused on what you WANT to do (not what you’re doing now;) and
- Network, network, network! Applying online for jobs outside your field is challenging enough – making connections that can give you an “in” is essential.
How I changed my career | How To Jump To Another career Field
As a first step from my own experience on changing my career. I changed careers after being in the same industry for 10 years. I also have a master’s degree. I worked in the consulting arena. I had to start by earning a certificate in Compliance and Ethics. Then, I joined an industry group of women professionals in the pharma space that allowed me to start networking in the industry. It took me a year to find a position, but I recently received two offers in one week.
Networking is key to pitching your transferrable skills. You definitely need to identify the industry or industries where you’d like to work. Once you do that, you can start reaching out to people on LinkedIn or in industry groups to start building your network. Look at job postings for positions in which you’re interested and tailor your resume to highlight the transferrable skills that apply.
Find connections on LinkedIn that work at the companies to which you’re applying. They can either refer you in or get your resume to the hiring manager. There are many in-house legal teams at companies across varied industries.
Do you know what industry you would like to get into?
I think you need to establish that first and after you have done so do you have transferable skills or do you need to take some course to get you up to speed? To be honest your 12 years of experience in one industry will make it a little difficult to get into the door of another.
Most companies are not going to take you seriously without a cover letter or some explanation informing them that you are changing your industry. I say that because a lot of people apply for jobs just to get a counteroffer from their current employer. “some employers do not know their employees worth until someone else wants them” Many people are still shocked that people do leave jobs after being there so long.
Keep in mind you are starting over in something new you may have to look a while to find a company that will take a gamble on someone with little experience. You may also have to take a pay cut until you have the experience in the new field. I do say go for it!
Be patient, job network link LinkedIn, and others to seek employment and assistance. How about a temp agency to help you figure out what you want to do next.
With all that said please take care of YOU! Do something to ease how you are feeling now and make this new venture positive. No one should be in a job where they feel horrible.
