1. The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Internship
The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Internship is a collaboration between the International Antarctic Institute (IAI), the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), University of Tasmania, the Secretariat for the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the Secretariat for the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP).

Eligibility as an Antarctica Intern
- As this is an IAI affiliated institution students from any IAI affiliated institution are eligible to apply for this internship.
- Tasmania, students would enroll in the unit (KSA725) through the IMAS Master of Antarctic Science course (because insurance cover provided by the University only applies to currently enrolled students).
2. Secretariat Internship (Duration: 6-8 weeks).
This internship is Australian-based or international students or early career professionals interested in a range of Antarctic matters, including science, compliance, data, policy, law and communications to:
- Support the meetings of the Commission, including its subcommittees or the Scientific Committee and its working groups.
- Take on a specific task or project for a period of six to eight weeks under the direct supervision of the relevant manager.
3. One Ocean Expeditions
It’s a company that grants scholars the opportunity to see and study the ocean first hand. They believe that the best way to learn about and appreciate the complexity and interconnection of the world’s ocean is by traveling it with marine naturalists and other experts dedicated to Antarctica conservation.
4. International Capacity Building Internship (Duration: about 16 weeks)
The duration of the internship/voyage depends on the scholar. it varies from 9-17 days. This Internship is for early career professionals with a role in their country’s engagement with CCAMLR. Interns will undertake a structured learning program about CCAMLR, it’s history, institutional structures, key successes and challenges for four to sixteen weeks.

5. ACE CRC Summer Internship
ACE CRC means Antarctic Climate and Ecosystem Cooperative Research Center. Two of its internships will be offered each year, providing students with the opportunity to undertake an 8-12 weeks project alongside some of the world’s leading scientists. The Internship lasts for a period of 8-12 weeks.
This is an exciting opportunity for high achieving undergraduates to gain real experience alongside leading scientists working on important global climate questions.
Benefits of This Antarctica Internship
Interns will receive a stipend of $700 per week. The ACE CRC will also cover airfare costs to Hobart for successful interstate applicants, but will not cover any additional relocation costs.
Eligibility for ACE CRC Summer Internship
- Interns must have completed at least three years of an undergraduate program, with an aspiration to go on to study Honors. Exceptional candidates may be considered after 2 years of undergraduate study.
- Interns must have a minimum “Credit” average, with an emphasis on high grades in subjects of relevance to the project.
- Interns are required to be enrolled at an Australian university.
